Frank Burgess was born in Natick, MA, April 25, 1860. He was graduated from the Boston public schools in 1875 and from high school in 1878.
He became gymnasium instructor of the Detroit YMCA in 1879. After one year he was employed by the Union Switch & Signal Company and later by the Gamewell Fire Alarm Company of Newton, MA.
He began work for George B. Grant, the founder of the Boston Gear Works, in 1881. In 1891 Mr. Burgess purchased the Boston Gear Works.
During his lifetime Mr. Burgess was a member of the National Metal Trades Association, SAE, American Gear Manufacturer’ Association, Boston Chamber of Commerce, and the Quincy Chamber of Commerce.
He was on the Board of Directors of the Quincy YMCA, of which he was President from 1914 to 1917, and was on the YMCA State Committee of Massachusetts and Rhodes Island. He was a founder and the First Commodore of the Wollaston Yacht Club.
Mr. Burgess’ hobbies were yachting, skating, club swinging, juggling balls – and standardized gears.
His watchwords were: “Accuracy, Economy, Dispatch.”
He passed to his reward (passed away) on May 18, 1929
